What is an industrial computer?

An Industrial Personal computer (IPC) is a ruggedised and enhanced personal computer that can operate reliably as an industrial controller in an industrial environment.

IPC
i.e. an Industrial Computer based on the PC bus. According to IDC statistics in 2000 PCs have accounted for more than 95% of general-purpose computers and have been familiar and recognised by a wide range of technical staff because of their low price, high quality, high output and rich software/hardware resources, which is the basis for the industrial computer boom. The main components of an Industrial PC are the industrial chassis, the passive backplane and the various boards that can be inserted into it, such as CPU cards, I/O cards, and GPU cards, etc. It is also designed with an all-steel chassis, card pressure bar filter, dual positive pressure fans and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) technology to solve the problems of electromagnetic interference, vibration, dust, high/low temperature at industrial sites.

Reliability: IPC has protection levels against dust, smoke, high/low temperature, humidity, vibration and corrosion, fast diagnosing and maintainability.Its MTTR (Mean Time to Repair) is generally 5min, MTTF 100,000 hours or more, while the MTTF of ordinary PC is only 10,000-15,000 hours.
Real-time: Industrial PCs offer real-time online detection and control to industrial production process and give a rapid response to changes in working conditions, and timely acquisition and output adjustment (watchdog function which is not available in ordinary PC), in distress since the reset, to ensure the normal operation of the system.
Expandability: Due to the use of the base board plus CPU card structure, the industrial PC has a strong input and output capability, up to 20 boards expandable, connected with a variety of peripherals, boards of  industrial site, such as with the road controller, video surveillance systems, vehicle detectors, etc., to complete a multiple tasks.

Compatibility: Industrial PCs have the ability to use ISA and PCI and PICMG resources at the same time, and support for a variety of operating systems, multi-lingual assembly, multi-tasking.

Design requirements for IPCs
IPCs usually work in harsher environments and have higher requirements for data security, so they are often specially designed to be hardened, dustproof, moisture-proof, corrosion-proof and radiation-proof.
IPCs also have very high requirements for expandability, and the interfaces need to be designed to meet specific external devices, so in most cases IPCs need to be individually tailored to meet the requirements.

The direction of development of IPC
As the performance of commercial PC becomes better and better,  the cheaper commercial PCs have been used in many industrial sites. The market for commercial PCs is also changing dramatically, because people are beginning to prefer more user-friendly touch panel PCs. Therefore, the tablet computer with the touch function will be the future trend in the industrial site.
