Soft Routes & NAS

What is Router?

Routing refers to the process of selecting the path of packets from the source address to the destination address on the network. In a computer network, the router is the device responsible for forwarding data packets. It selects the appropriate path for forwarding according to the destination address in the data packet. Routing is a very important part of network communication. It determines how packets arrive from the source address to the destination address, and can be optimized according to network topology and routing policies to improve network performance and reliability. Routing can also dynamically adjust the packet forwarding path according to the change of topology and link state in the network to adapt to the change of the network.

What is the difference between a router and a modem?

A router and a modem are two different devices, and there are some differences in what they do and how they work.
1. Function: A router is a network device used to transfer network packets from one network to another. It can connect multiple devices and transmit packets to the target device through a routing algorithm. A Modem is a device used to convert a digital signal to an analog signal (modulation) in order to transmit data over a telephone line or cable line of sight, and to convert an analog signal back to a digital signal (demodulation).
2. Working principle: The router checks the destination IP address of the packet and determines the best path to send the packet to the target device according to the information in the routing table. A modem converts a digital signal to an analog signal and sends the signal over a transmission medium, such as a telephone line or cable line of sight. The modem at the receiving end converts the analog signal back to digital so that the receiving device can decode and process the data.
3. Connection method: The router is usually connected to a broadband modem or fiber optic converter via Ethernet to access the Internet. The modem is usually connected to the Internet service provider's network via a phone line or cable line of sight.
In summary, routers are mainly used for network connection and packet transmission, while modems are mainly used for the conversion of digital signals and analog signals in order to transmit data over telephone lines or cable lines. In some devices, the Router and Modem may be integrated in a single device, called a Router Modem.

What is NAS?

NAS, short for Network Attached Storage, is a type of storage device that is connected over a network. It is usually a dedicated hardware device with its own operating system and file management system, which can provide file storage and sharing services over the network. NAS devices can be connected to the local area network (LAN) or the Internet, allowing multiple users to access and share storage space at the same time, and providing file sharing, backup, and storage expansion functions. NAS devices usually have a large storage capacity and can achieve data redundancy and fault tolerance through the Hard Disk array (RAID) technology, improving data security and reliability. Users can access NAS devices in a variety of ways, such as through a web browser, specialized applications, or remote access protocols (such as FTP, SSH, etc.) for easy file management and data access. NAS devices are suitable for individual users, home users, small offices, and small - and medium-sized enterprises (smes) to meet users' requirements for large-capacity storage, data sharing, and data backup. It provides a flexible, scalable and easy to manage storage solution that effectively manages and protects users' data.

NAS advantages:

NAS (Network Attached Storage) is a device specifically designed to store and share files and has many advantages. Here are some of the main benefits of NAS:
1. High performance: NAS devices are usually equipped with powerful processors and large memory capacity, so they can provide high performance data transfer speed. This allows multiple users to access and share files at the same time without delays or stalling.
2. Flexibility: NAS devices support multiple file systems and protocols, such as SMB/CIFS, NFS, and FTP, making them compatible with various operating systems and devices. This means that users can access and share files from different devices and operating systems, such as Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.
3. Scalability: NAS devices usually have expandable storage capacity and can add additional hard drives or expand storage capacity as needed. This gives users the flexibility to add storage space as needed without having to buy new equipment.
4. Data backup and recovery: NAS devices usually have built-in backup and recovery functions, which can automatically back up important files and data. This allows users to easily recover files in the event of data loss or corruption, protecting the security and integrity of the data.
5. Data sharing and collaboration: NAS devices support multi-user access and sharing of files, making it easy to establish a file sharing and collaboration environment. Users can access and edit files from different devices and locations, facilitating teamwork and information sharing.
6. Remote access: NAS devices usually support remote access. Users can remotely access and manage files in NAS devices over the Internet. This allows users to access and manage files anytime, anywhere, convenient and practical.
7. Data security: NAS devices usually have strong security functions, such as data encryption, access control, and user rights management. This ensures that only authorized users can access and modify files, protecting the security and confidentiality of the data.
In short, NAS devices offer advantages such as high performance, flexibility, scalability, data backup and recovery, data sharing and collaboration, remote access, and data security. This makes NAS ideal for storing and sharing files for groups with different needs such as individual users, home users and business users.

Simple configuration of a route:

1. Central Processing Unit (CPU) : responsible for performing various functions and tasks of the router, including packet forwarding, routing algorithm calculation, management control, etc.
2. Memory: used to store the operating system, configuration files, routing tables and other data of the router.
3. Interfaces: used to connect with other network devices, including Ethernet interfaces, wireless interfaces, serial ports, etc.
4. Routing Table: Stores the network address known by the router and the corresponding next hop information, which is used to determine the forwarding path of packets.
5. Routing Algorithm: Calculates the best packet forwarding path based on the routing table and network topology information.
6. Management Control Module: responsible for router configuration, monitoring, and management, including remote management, fault detection, and performance statistics.
7. Data Forwarding Engine: Forwards packets from one interface to another according to the routing table and forwarding policy.
8. Power Supply: Provide power support to ensure the normal operation of the router.
